The Mysteries of the Synoptic Gospels: Uncovering the Hidden Layers of Matthew, Mark, and Luke

In this groundbreaking course, delve into the historical puzzles surrounding the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—three of the most influential texts in Christian history. Led by Dr. Mark Goodacre, explore the origins of these Gospels and the intricate relationships between them.

Through rigorous academic inquiry, uncover insights into their authorship, sources, and the historical reliability of the stories they tell. Discover how these texts shaped early Christian thought and continue to impact modern understandings of Jesus and his movement.

Additionally, examine the unique challenges each Gospel presents, from Mark's mysterious portrayal of Jesus’s messianic secret to Matthew's focus on Jewish traditions and Luke’s quest for historical accuracy. Unravel how these works reflect different communities and theological perspectives while searching for the lost sources that may lie behind them.

Fascinating Questions Explored in this Course:

  • How are the Synoptic Gospels interconnected, and what hidden sources might they share?

  • Why do the Gospels offer different versions of key events in Jesus’s life, such as his birth, crucifixion, and resurrection?
  • What was Mark’s “messianic secret,” and why did he choose to portray Jesus in such a cryptic way?
  • How did Matthew’s Gospel navigate the tension between Jewish tradition and the emerging Christian faith?
  • Did Luke intend his Gospel to be a historical account, and how reliable is it as a historical source?
